TEV and Tecon Santos set new records in May

Santos Brasil brought May to a close with two important milestones, one at the Vehicle Terminal (TEV) and another at Tecon Santos, both located at the Port of Santos. TEV set a historic monthly record after handling 31,913 thousand vehicles, while Tecon shipped the largest number of reefer containers in its history on a single ship, 1,103 units.
The TEV terminal in Santos executed 14 dockings in May, with 27,430 vehicles exported to Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, South Africa, and Indonesia and 4,483 units imported. Heavy vehicles such as trucks, buses, and agricultural and construction gear are also included in this total.
Vehicle throughput in the first quarter of 2022 was 54,325, with exports amounting to 48,102 units and imports of 6,223, a stable number compared to the same period in 2021, a year marked by increased movement due to pent-up demand caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The terminal has also outperformed itself regarding the number of export cars carried on a single call. It set a record in February when 5,209 units were loaded for export on the Glovis Solomon freighter in just over 24 hours. In April, the figure was topped by 5,334 vehicles on the Glovis Sky vessel. In May, the Glovis Sonic ship was loaded with 5,615 units.
Tecon Santos
Tecon Santos, the largest container terminal in South America, recorded the shipment of the largest number of reefer containers on a single ship on May 16th. The Cap San Maleas vessel handled 1,103 reefer containers out of a total of 3,580 containers handled on that call.
According to Roberto Teller, director of Port Operations at Santos Brasil, the persistence of bottlenecks in global logistics due to the Covid-19 pandemic, causing the closure of ports in China and congestion in European ports, has highlighted the capacity of Santos Brazil to efficiently absorb the increase in demand at the port of Santos, even at peak times.
“A shipment of reefer containers of this magnitude requires meticulous planning and execution. It is a service that asks for a high level of coordination across all teams. As for the case of TEV, the resumption of light and heavy vehicle import and export has encouraged increasingly efficient operations,” he explains.
Last year, Santos Brasil served more than 70 extra cargo ships that were dammed up and arrived at the port of Santos during a period of high demand at Tecon Santos. Between January and May of this year, Tecon Santos serviced 20 additional ships. “We have invested considerably in the terminal in recent years to accommodate the surge in demand with quality,” Teller explains.
