Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro (CDRJ) and Karpowership Brasil Energia (KPS) entered into an agreement to install, within the port area, electricity distribution towers, floating thermoelectric plants, and overhead transmission lines.

This is a landmark project in Brazil, of critical importance to the country, led by Karpowership, a Turkish-based firm.

According to the project, Sepetiba Bay will receive four floating thermoelectric plants, a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) for LNG, in addition to temporary towers to transmit the energy generated there. The first thermoelectric vessels are momentarily moored in the Port of Angra dos Reis. The floating thermal power plants Porsud I and II and Karkey I and II will have a total installed capacity of 560 MW.

This sort of project intends to safeguard the continuity of Brazil’s energy supply in light of the extreme water scarcity that occurred throughout 2021, resulting in low storage in the reservoirs of hydroelectric facilities in the country’s key basins.

According to Karpowership, the project received an integrated environmental license (LAI) from INEA to begin implementing a small transmission line in the Industrial District of Santa Cruz and is awaiting an operating permit from the licensing body to make the installation and operation of energy generation viable. Karpowership also claims that it has already received permission from regulatory agencies, such as Aneel and ANP, to operate the venture.

The project was also analyzed by the Brazilian Navy, which included piloting simulations. According to the contractor, the future operation to be carried out by Karpowership is expected to last for 44 months.

Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro expects to raise around R$ 32 million with the operation.
