On the morning of June 22nd, the Ro-Ro cargo ship “CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY” docked at the public pier (berth 03) of the Port of Itajaí, bringing on board 737 vehicles imported from the German automaker BMW and a Mustang model from the consignee SUNTRANS Logistics Brazil.
Originating from the Port of Cartagena, Colombia, the ship California Highway is Panama-flagged, 199.97 meters long by 32.26 meters wide, and used to transport wheeled cargo like cars and constriction equipment.
According to the Superintendence of the Port of Itajaí, the total weight of the vehicles brought to Itajaí is 1,477,292.00 kilos. Once undocked from the public pier (berth 03), the vessel will follow its maritime route to the port of Paranaguá, its last stop in Brazil.
The California Highway vessel belongs to the Japanese ocean carrier K-LINE. Operations with Ro-Ro ships are expected to become monthly at Itajaí.
The last mooring such as this occurred on May 25th, with the ship FLORIDA HIGHWAY. Both vessels use the Roll On Roll Off system, which consists of removing vehicles through a lift ramp.
The operation can take up to five hours, depending on the number of vehicles.
“In June, the Port of Itajaí welcomed its fourth Roll On Roll Off ship, which entails a complicated logistical process that aligns our operation with other Brazilian ports. All vehicles leave carefully the public area, driven by agents from the port area,” says Fábio da Veiga, Superintendent of the Port of Itajaí.
After landing, the vehicles are moved to the yards of ValePort and the Contiguous Customs Area (RAC), where they are inspected. Then, the cars are shipped in stork trucks, and sent to other cities and states in the country.
