Vegetable-derived liquid exports on the rise in the Port of Paranaguá

Exports of vegetable-derived liquid products are on the rise through the Port of Paranaguá. In addition to soybean oil, which broke a new record in May, the increases in the volumes of other products, such as biodiesel, alcohol, corn oil, and even wild turnip oil, stand out.

In total, adding these five liquid bulks, 757,733 tonnes were exported in the first five months of this year. The volume is about 31% higher than last year: 577,603 tonnes.

There was no shipment of corn or turnip oil recorded in 2021. This year, however, from January to May, respectively, 8,200 and 1,502 tonnes were transported through the Paraná terminal.

“Few people are aware of it, but forage turnip oil is utilized as a raw material alternative, for example, in the manufacturing of biodiesel, which is in great demand by companies in general,” explains the Director of Operations at Portos do Paraná, Luiz Teixeira da Silva Junior.

According to data from the Ministry of Economy, the leading destination for this product from January to May was Mexico.

Shipments – Liquid bulk products are handled in four different berths distributed across two piers, one private and one public, exclusively used for this type of cargo.

Lucas Guzen, senior commercial manager at Cattalini, a private terminal that is the main operator of liquid exports at the Port of Paranaguá, emphasized that:

“The commitment of staff, the existing port infrastructure, the logistical organization provided to clients, and the implementation of measures to encourage productivity all contributed to maintaining the greatest safety standards,” he says.

Also, according to the company, the average amount of liquids of vegetable origin brought by trucks via roads to the port is 7,500 tonnes per day. “Additionally, the simultaneous use of two ducts, which connect our Tanking Centers to the private pier, enhances activity by 50% at our loading deck, thus enhancing performance,” he says.
