Brazil’s agriculture trade balance shows USD 15.71bn in exports in June

With the price index increasing by 28.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, agriculture exports from Brazil reached the record value of the series in June 2022: US$ 15.71 billion (+31.2%). There was also an expansion of 2.1% in the volume shipped.
Imports from the agribusiness industry totaled US$ 1.53 billion (+19.8%), with average prices up 17.9% and imports 1.6%.
The highlights of the agriculture trade balance in Brazil in June/2022 were the shipments of the soy complex, meat (chicken and beef), and coffee.
Soybean complex
The soybean complex, the main vein of Brazilian agribusiness, reached a record of US$ 8.06 billion in foreign sales for June (+31.9%), despite the drop in imported volume (-2.3%).
China, a traditional importer of Brazilian oilseeds, acquired 64.5% of the exported amount in June, 6.49 million tonnes (-8.2%). Exports of soybean meal, the second main product of the complex, reached US$ 1.20 billion in June (+63.8%). For the first time in the historical series, exports of these products in June surpassed US$ 1 billion. The value reached resulted from the record volume exported (+33.5%) and the 22.7% increase in the average export price.

The supply of soybean meal for animal feed reduced globally with lower production of soybeans in South America (Argentina and Brazil) and the war in Ukraine (the world’s largest exporter of sunflower meal), affecting international prices. The primary importing market of soybean meal from Brazil was the European Union, which purchased US$ 448.26 million (+41.4%) or 804.8 thousand tonnes (+8.0%; 35.4% share.
Animal protein
Foreign sales of animal protein, the second most important sector in the Brazilian export basket, reached US$ 2.35 billion in June 2022 (+32.0%), the highest monthly value recorded since January 1997. The amount was obtained mainly due to the increase in average export prices (+25.8%), despite the slight rise in exported quantity (+4.9%).
The animal product exported the most was beef, with US$ 1.14 billion gathered from exports (+36.9%), a record value for June, with an increase of 6.6% in volumes and 28.4% in average prices. The most important market was China, which acquired 65.9% of the value exported by Brazil in June, which meant US$ 752.99 million (+70.7%).

Chicken meat exports also reached a record in the historical series in June 2022, surpassing the mark of 900 million dollars to reach US$ 932.12 million (+46.7%).

Coffee
The coffee sector exported the equivalent of US$ 788.74 million in June 2022 (+73.6%). Foreign sales of green coffee were US$ 721.50 million, a record value for June, an expansion of 76.7% compared to the US$ 408.32 million exported in June 2021. Soluble coffee exports registered US$ 57.2 million in the aforementioned month (+46.1%).
The main markets to which Brazil exported green coffee were: the European Union (US$ 376.68 million; +82.5%) and the United States (US$ 168.69 million; +171.9%). The record value of green coffee exports was due to the 70.3% rise in the average export price.
Year to date
In the first half of 2022, agriculture products exports from Brazil totaled US$ 79.32 billion (+29.4%), a record value for the period. The increase occurred as a result of the higher prices practiced (+27.7%), while the quantum exports rose at a slower pace (+1.3%). As a result, agribusiness represented 48.3% of Brazilian exports in the first six months of 2022.
Agribusiness imports reached US$ 8.14 billion in the semester (+8.5%), totally influenced by the variation in average prices (+17.7%), as the volume index dropped: -7.8%. This value does not include imported inputs.
