Three crew members barred at Port of Santos over monkeypox suspicion
Aug, 08, 2022 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202232
Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) reported, on August 6, that there were three suspected cases of monkeypox among the 22 crew members of the vessel Captain John P, which was prevented from docking at the Port of Santos recently.
In a note, Anvisa said that two of the suspects disembarked on Thursday (4), while the third left the ship on Friday (5). They were taken to a private hospital provided for in the health plan network contracted by the vessel.
The agency reported that patients only experience skin rashes as symptoms. However, the suspected cases are pending confirmation through tests.
Also, according to Anvisa, examining the other 19 crew members will be necessary. The vessel will still undergo a physical inspection this week.
The vessel, which transports bulk substances, left San Lorenzo, Argentina, and is in an anchorage area, as informed by the Santos Port Authority (SPA).
Monkeypox
There are nine confirmed cases of monkeypox in the Santos coastal region, four in Santos, three in Praia Grande, one in São Vicente and another in Itanhaém.
The disease is characterized by the presence of blister-like lesions on the skin. Those infected also experience fever, headache, and body aches.
Transmission occurs through contact between humans and droplets emitted in sneezes and coughs by infected people.
