Green coffee exports from Brazil, as of July 2022, totaled 2.168 million bags of 60 kg, down 15.8% from the same month in 2021, making it the lowest volume for the month since 2018, according to data from the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé) released on August 09.

Exports of Arabica beans reached 2.02 million bags in July, down 6.5% from the same month in 2021, while shipments of robusta/conilon totaled 144,600 bags, down 64.8% in the same period.

Logistical problems, firm demand from the domestic industry, and delays in harvesting help explain the sector’s performance last month.

“Brazilian manufacturers of roasted and ground coffee, as well as soluble coffee, have kept a strong demand for canephora to be used in their blends, and we must not forget that, despite a slight improvement, obstacles to global maritime trade remain,” said the entity’s president, Günter Häusler, in a note.

He recalled that the entry of new crops takes place, with greater significance, from August and beyond but highlighted that a delay in the harvest this year also limited shipments.

“The harvest is proceeding normally nowadays,” said the official, “although the delay in prior months has had a minor impact on exports.”

“Additionally, the increasingly rapid price changes, together with the continuing conflict in Eastern Europe and the uncertainties associated with the global macroeconomy, have lowered the dynamism of commerce, prompting manufacturers to investigate the best possibilities for sales,” Häusler noted.
