The Paraguayan Grains and Oilseed Traders Association (Capeco) announced Paraguay’s wheat exports rose by a massive 632% to 328,924 tons between August 2018 and February 2019, up from 44,901 tons year-on-year. The organ attributed to the country’s increased wheat shipments to a bumper crop in 2018, allowing excess production to be exported.
Of the total volume of wheat exported, neighbour and Mercosur partner Brazil imported 91% of the commodity. The following graph based on Capeco data shows Paraguay’s year-on-year export trends since the 2006/07 crop cycle:
DatamarNews said Brazil’s approval of a 750,000-ton tariff-free wheat quota from the US, and possibly other non-Mercosur countries, is causing concern in the Argentine government which may retaliate with a sugar tariff.
