Top exporter India approves 20% tariff on rice exports
Sep, 09, 2022 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202236
India announced, on September 8th, the imposition of a 20% tariff on its rice exports to hold down prices in the domestic market after the lack of rain reduced planting in the country.
The tariff will affect exports of white and brown rice, which accounts for more than 60% of Indian exports, said B.V. Krishna Rao, president of the All India Rice Exporters Association, told Reuters. Basmati rice and parboiled rice will not be surcharged.
India is the second largest rice-producing country in the world, after China, but it leads in exports. With the New Delhi move, analysts believe international buyers will turn to Vietnam or Thailand.
