U.S. railways to halt grain shipments ahead of potential shutdown
Sep, 14, 2022 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202237
Rail freight workers in the United States have threatened to strike on Friday (16), which would severely disrupt grain transport in the country.
US President Joe Biden has urged railroad operators and the two unions involved in negotiations to establish an agreement.
If all parties do not come to an agreement by Friday, September 16, railways are expected to shut down, affecting the supply chain for several commodities, including grains.
In a letter dated September 12, National Grain and Feed Association President and CEO Mike Seyfert stated, “A railway shutdown on September 16 would hit the industry just as the harvest is advancing in many parts of the United States.”
“Economic damage across the food and agricultural supply chain would be rapid and severe.”
