Brazil Federal Police fights drug trafficking at the Port of Salvador
Sep, 20, 2022 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202238
On the morning of September 20, Brazil’s Federal Police launched the operation “Decontamination II.”
The operation investigates a criminal organization involved in the international traffic of narcotics using containers stored in the Port of Salvador bound to European ports.
The criminal organization acted by co-opting employees who worked in the Port of Salvador (Bahia) to access the Container Terminal – TECON under the pretext of providing service.
After entering the container terminal area with bags containing large amounts of cocaine in trucks owned by outsourced companies, the criminals broke the seal of specific containers, deposited the cocaine-containing bags, and closed them with a cloned seal.
The first phase of the operation was launched on 04/01/22. During the investigations, 3591 kilos of cocaine were confiscated, 3333 kilos in the Port of Salvador and 258 kilos in the Port of Rotterdam – Netherlands.
On 09/19/2021, a TECON employee and two workers of outsourced firms were arrested while loading 165 kilograms of cocaine onto a container bound for Europe.
The seizures occurred in joint operations between the Federal Police and the Federal Revenue Service. After the onset of the first phase of the operation and the analysis of the confiscated material, the authorities found proof of the participation of third parties that became the target of search warrants and preventive detention.
Federal Police officers executed four search and seizure warrants and three preventive arrest warrants in Salvador/BA, Lauro de Freitas/BA, and Balneário Camboriú/SC.
