Porto Murtinho: Brazil’s new entryway of fertilizers

The first ever shipment of imported fertilizers has recently arrived at the port terminal in Porto Murtinho, operated by the FV Cereais Group. The barges carrying the product arrived on September 29 from Uruguay, while the unloading procedures began on Monday, October 3 only, confirmed Genivaldo dos Santos, operations manager at the port terminal.

The operation consists of three thousand tonnes divided into three barges in total. The compost was prepared in Uruguay with material brought from abroad; the importer in Brazil is a rural producer in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, who will use the entirety of the volume in his property. According to the manager, this is the first-ever fertilizer import operation conducted through FV Cereais Port Terminal, hence its symbolic importance.

“It represents an activity we always wanted to encourage at Porto Murtinho: imports of various products for Mato Grosso do Sul but also for neighboring states. Porto Murtinho is a viable entryway for fertilizers.”

The FV Cereais Port Terminal has been operational since 2020, focusing on the outflow of instate agricultural produce. Last year, 245,000 tonnes of soybeans were shipped, with the last convoy setting sail on June 28. After that date, the river became no longer navigable. That year, the soybean operation lasted until August, says Santos, totaling 272,000 tonnes.

“We expect to see navigable conditions on the river until mid-October when we intend to ship 32 thousand tons of sugar.”

Jaime Verruck, secretary of Semagro (Secretariat for the Environment, Economic Development, Production and Family Agriculture), highlights the initiatives taken to make the State’s logistical axis viable.

“The development of our logistical axis has received top priority from the state government over the past seven years. Because of this, a specific program to promote ports on the Paraguay River gave special attention to the logistics of the Porto Murtinho axis (highway and Paraguay waterway). This prompted investments in the construction of the FV Cereais terminal as well as a parking area for more than 400 trucks. The state government will also sell the public port terminal this year. The goal has always been to establish a corridor for both grain imports and exports. This was the first operation, which had a small volume initially but has a tendency to grow over time, especially as operations along the Bioceanic Route get underway.”
