Brazilian purchases of salmon from Chile back to pre-pandemic levels

According to official statistics compiled by ProChile Brasil, an institution of the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chilean exports of salmon and trout to Brazil totaled US$ 478 million in the first half of this year. Shipment revenue was 29.3% higher than in the same period in 2021.
Also, as a result of the increase in sales to the Brazilian market, Chile’s revenue from salmon and trout exports in the first half of 2022 was the highest for the 6-month period since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
Demand grew in all major buyers. The United States is the leading destination for Chilean salmon and trout exports, with 42% of the total volume, according to SalmonChile. Japan is the second largest buyer, with 19%, and Brazil, which accounts for just over 11%, is the third.
The increase in consumption of healthy proteins in the world has driven the advance forward, argues Corales. “We also have the best prices, which makes our product competitive in the market,” he says.
Salmon and trout are among Chile’s main exports. Between January and July of this year, shipments of the two species generated US$ 4.1 billion for the country, according to the Chilean Central Bank statistics compiled by SalmonChile. This amount corresponded to more than 12% of the country’s total exports in this period (the comparison does not consider the numbers on copper sales abroad).
