Brazilian flower industry celebrates BRL 8 bn in exports up to September

The flower and ornamental plants industry, one of the branches of agriculture that felt the most impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, is slowly regaining momentum, which is excellent news for producers who have endured huge losses over the past years.

According to data from the National Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA), this market sector generated a total turnover of R$ 11 billion in 2021. This year, though, until September, exports generated BRL 8 billion in income, much of it from sales to the Netherlands, Italy, and the United States.

The activity that generates the most demand is the decoration of events such as weddings, graduations, and quinceañeras, accounting for 30% of exports. Self-service and landscaping come next, corresponding to 21% and 20% of the market.

According to Flávio Vieira, president of the Minas Gerais Flower and Plant Producers Association, the market has begun to “wake up” and show signs of recovery as of August. “We have successfully overcome the most challenging period in our history. Movement decreased by 80%.” According to Flávio, an industry veteran with 35 years of experience in the flower and plant market, many farmers stopped producing flowers and ornamental plants and switched activities to other agribusiness sectors.

“Unlike other branches of agriculture, which produce food, flower production is not an essential service. That’s why we were one of the sectors that most felt the impact of the interruption of events,” argues Mário Raimundo de Melo, producer of roses from Barbacena. He has been in the business for 25 years, owns four hectares planted, and is preparing the soil to expand production even further. His goal is to increase the 150,000 dozen he currently harvests annually. He announced, “We are finalizing an agreement with the Cooperativa de Holambra (SP) to sell alongside them.”
