Exports of grains and bran increased by 102.6% in October at the Port of Paranagua’s east export corridor. Last year, the complex shipped 765,700 tonnes of solid vegetable bulk in the same month and 1,551,466 tonnes in 2022.
“Despite almost 12 days of no activities due to the rain, the high productivity observed in the other 19 days of operation helped us achieve this growth,” explains the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.
From January to October year-to-date, compared to last year, exports were 7.4% up. In the same ten months last year, 14,816,811 tonnes of solid vegetable bulk were shipped, while 15,913,067 tonnes were shipped this year.
Garcia recalls that, in 2021, the Brazilian corn crop went through tough times and that, this year, corn exporters filled in the gap left by Ukraine, which is at war with Russia in the international market.
Maize – corn drove the Port of Paranagua’s result up both year-on-year and year-to-date. In October alone, 568,739 tonnes of the cereal were exported, 821% more than the 61,709 tonnes shipped in the month of 2021.
This year, 3,714,053 tonnes of corn were shipped. In 2021, in the same period, the volume did not exceed 714,464 tonnes. The growth reached almost 420%.
Nine of the twelve terminals spread along the port’s east corridor stored and loaded the cereal in October.
The terminal Rocha was the one that saw the largest volume of corn in the month, exporting 243,055 tonnes of the product. Daniel Camargo, commercial and logistics manager at Rocha, explained that their structure and demand from mixed clients led to this result. “We have four warehouses, two of which have partitions and can serve up to two different products at the same time,” he says.
Camargo also explained that the Rocha Terminal receives up to 400 trucks daily, bringing soybeans and bran. In addition, the terminal also operates with loads carried by trains, approximately 250 wagons/day. “Our expectation is to see the movement of another 650 thousand tonnes of corn,” he says.
Other products – Shipments of soybeans at the corridor this year total 8,287,044 tonnes (in 2021, it was 10,225,327 tonnes). Exports of soybean meal are to reach 3,823,563 tonnes (last year, 3,843,032 tonnes). Wheat exports may reach 32,895 tonnes versus 33,989 tonnes in 2021.
Corex – At the Corex east export corridor, there are other private terminals besides Rocha, including Cotriguaçu, Louis Dreyfus, Coamo (with two terminals), Cargill, Interalli, Centro Sul, AGTL, Cimbessul. In the Paranagua complex, exporters who do not have their own terminals use public silos.
