Argentine Workers’ Central Union declares strike

Argentina’s Workers’ Central Union, CTA, has announced a nation-wide general strike on April 30 protesting President Mauricio Macri’s austerity policies. If the stoppage goes ahead as planned, land and air transport, garbage collection and road freight are likely to be affected, among other things. Trade union leaders made the announcement yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Argentine government is planning to roll out stimulus packages to provide relief from inconveniences caused by inflation and a rise in poverty – a move that may not surprise the opponents when the October election is at hand. For example, the Macri government is considering the return of plans that existed during the Kirchnerism period e.g. a package which protects the price of certain commodities from rising, as well as compensation packages for registered union members.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the South American country’s consumer price index (CPI) rose 3.8% in February, compared to January, while the rolling, 12-month inflation rate came in at 51.3% in February.

Last week on Thursday, thousands of people participated in a rally organized by the Workers’ Central Union and politicians to protest against Macri’s regime and economic policies.
