Port authority Portos RS released, on December 19, data on the cargo throughput of ports in Rio Grande do Sul from January to November. These numbers account for the cargo moved in the ports of Rio Grande, Pelotas, and Porto Alegre, as well as companies in the industrial district of Rio Grande.
The cargo movement was still influenced by the drought that plagued the region in recent years, but that, in 2022, hit producers the hardest. Rio Grande do Sul ports saw 35,838,523 tonnes of throughput in the first eleven months of the year, down 18.19% from the same period last year, also 3.51% lower than 2020.
Out of this figure, 33,981,529 tonnes went through the Port of Rio Grande alone, which saw the passage of 10,002,230 tonnes of general cargo, 19,966,614 tonnes of solid bulk, and another 4,012,685 tonnes of liquid bulk loads. Wheat exports experienced the most significant increase, rising 233.40% over the previous year.
Another product whose volume increased substantially was wood chips (+14.86%). On the other hand, the volume of soybeans transported dropped from 12,860,109 tonnes in 2021 to 5,342,421 tonnes in 2022, a negative change of 58.46%.
China remains the top export destination (31.68%), followed by Spain (4.98%), the United States (4.68%), Portugal (4.22%), Morocco (4.10%), and Iran (3.81%). Argentina accounts for 12.81 percent of total imports, followed by China (10.54 percent), Saudi Arabia (7.84 percent), Canada (6.95 percent), the United States (6.42%), and Morocco (5.42%).
The Port of Pelotas saw 1,117,827 tonnes, a 19.47% increase over the previous year when 935,658 tonnes were moved. Also, 946,029 tonnes of wood, 159,619 tonnes of clinker, and 12,179 tonnes of soybeans have been processed.
The Port of Porto Alegre had a throughput of 739,167 tonnes, a drop of 27.53% compared to last year. There were also 477,933 tonnes of fertilizers, 100,161 tonnes of barley, 93,085 tonnes of general cargo, 47,503 tonnes of salt, and another 20,485 tonnes of wheat moved.
From January to November, 476,204 containers were handled, 294,710 of which were full and 181,494 of which were empty.
