Port of Santos count of coffee bag shipments reach 29 million year-to-date
Jan, 05, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202301
A total of 29 million bags of coffee left Brazil through the Port of Santos between January and November 2022. The volume represents an increase of 4% compared to the shipments of the commodity in the same period of 2021. Last year, 80.7% of exported Brazilian coffee bags left the country through the Sao Paulo-based port.
The data are from the Brazilian Council of Coffee Exporters (Cecafé), which also shows that, from January to the end of November, Brazil exported 36 million bags, down 1.8% year on year. Nevertheless, the amount of foreign exchange earned in the period, US$ 8.5 billion, is a record, up 55.1% from the S$ 5.4 billion of the first 11 months of 2021.
In addition to the Port of Santos, another 22 ports worked as coffee outlets. The Rio de Janeiro complexes exported 5.3 million bags, 14.9% of the total. Paranaguá and Vitória follow appear next and account for shipments of 327,932 bags and 231,446 bags, respectively.

The use of containers for coffee exports decreased slightly across the country. While 103,005 TEUs transported the commodity from January to November 2021, 99,016 TEUs did so from January to November 2022.
“In the 2022 balance sheet, we can effectively notice the impact of logistical bottlenecks on the volume of exports, which are slightly lower than last year. This performance reflects the national industry’s strong demand for canephora coffees, which remain more competitive than arabica for Brazilian coffee growers, so much so that shipments of conilon and robusta abroad dropped 60% from January to November,” says Günter Häusler, president of Cecafé.
According to the executive, the logistics scenario has improved gradually over the year, allowing the country to achieve a good result in November. However, it is essential to emphasize that there are still significant challenges and that the coffee market is far from ordinary.
“On the other hand, the demand continues, and large consumers keep coming to the world’s largest producer and exporter due to the quality and diversity of our products, which respect socio-environmental criteria and meet the sustainability requirements of international markets, making Brazil a loyal supplier.”
The United States tops the list of destinations for Brazilian coffee between January and November 2022, with 7.3 million bags imported, an amount 3.3% higher than that seen in the same period of 2021, equivalent to 20.4% of the total.
