Uruguay expects a 5-year high wheat output

According to the Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) April 9 report, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts Uruguay’s wheat production to reach 825,000 tons in the 2019/20 season, up 11% compared to 2018/19 and the highest output estimate since 2015/16. The planted area for wheat is also projected to increase to 250,000 hectares in the same period, up from 200,000 hectares in 2018/19, according to the organ.

“Factors supporting additional acreage include the current high soil moisture content, availability of quality seed, need for winter crop cover rotations and weed control,” the USDA outlined.

The country’s wheat exports are expected to remain the same as the 2018/19 season, at 320,000 tons. According to the USDA, wheat growers have already committed 270,000 tons for export from the 2018/19 season, and the country is likely to ship another 30,000 to 50,000 tons before May when the soybean harvest starts to reach the ports. The South American country exported six vessels of wheat between December 2018 and February 2019, USDA said. Most went to Algeria and Indonesia, with some smaller volumes exported to Brazil.
