The port market in the state of Ceará is expanding and looking for new investments. As a result, a container terminal at the Port of Fortaleza has been leased by Companhia Docas do Ceará (CDC) and awarded to container operator Progeco. The six-month contract will allow for new cargo-handling operations in the region.
Because of its high potential, the Port of Fortaleza is an important asset to the Ceará port market regarding container operations.
Thus, Companhia Docas do Ceará and Progeco signed an agreement for the temporary six-month lease of a container terminal at the port complex.
Progeco is a subsidiary of the French company CMA Terminals, a multinational in the maritime transport sector. According to the initial contract, it will operate and maintain its own cargo throughout three operational areas.
This will not only give new directions for the company but will also contribute to the growth of container throughput at the Port of Fortaleza.
The company’s leased container terminal has a total area of 88,499.75 square meters, a considerable size for Progeco’s future operations in the Ceará-based complex.
The Port of Fortaleza has an old vocation and growing potential in container operations.
Among the complex’s most important operations is exporting fruits in refrigerated containers (of the reefer type), particularly melon, via a long-haul line.

The director-president of Companhia Docas do Ceará, Mayhara Chaves, highlighted the importance of leases such as the one carried out with Progeco, and the previous results derived from similar contracts.
“In 2018, when I took over the management of CDC, the leased areas corresponded to only 8.8% of the polygon area of the Port of Fortaleza. At the end of 2022, we managed to more than triple the use of leased areas, reaching 29.4%. The leasing, among other advantages, should provide greater revenue and, as a consequence, solidify the excellent financial situation of CDC, now recovered,” she said.
