Antaq balance sheet brings growth to cargo handling in waterways

A statistical survey done by the National Agency for Waterway Transport (Antaq) points to a rise in the movement of cargo on Brazilian waterways. Only in the months of October and November 2022, does the increase reach 30% in certain hydrographic regions compared to the previous year, reinforcing the trend of positive annual balance – still no date to be disclosed.

The previews released by the agency in Brasilia show that the Amazon Hydrographic Region, which has one of the greatest water potentials on the planet, had a 30% growth in the movement recorded in October and November of last year, compared to the same period of 2021. In the Tocantins-Araguaia Hydrographic Region, the rise was of 25.3% in the same comparative period.

Together, the two regions have transported 5.084 million tons in two months and are responsible for 75% of the country’s movement by inland navigation. In turn, the South Atlantic, Paraguay and Paraná waterways (which complete the amount moved in the Brazilian hydrographic regions) transported 1.7 million tons of cargo.

The greatest growth occurred in the month of October, when all Brazilian hydrographic regions registered an increase in their inland navigation. The Amazônica and Tocantins-Araguaia were also highlighted, showing a 47.4% and 53.9% growth in movement, respectively. In November, there was a 1.1% drop in the Amazon Hydrographic Region, a reduction considered small by Antaq, while Tocantins-Araguaia maintained a positive balance of 20.1%.
