Colombia reports problems in formation of fruits and 10% decrease in coffee exports

For the first time in recent months, arabica coffee production showed stability, according to data released by the National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC). In January, production in the neighboring country reached 868,000 bags, the same volume registered last year. The FNC also drew attention to the problems caused by La Niña and also to the 10% drop in exports in the last 12 months.

La Niña

The second largest Arabica producer in the world, Colombia has been feeling the impacts of excessive rain on crops for three years, which according to the FNC justifies the low productivity in the last year.

The most recent report indicates that weather conditions have started to improve, but have impacted production during the flowering and fruit set period.

In the last 12 months (February 2022 to January 2023), production was close to 11.1 million bags, 10% less than the almost 12.4 million bags in the previous cycle.

In the coffee year, between October 2022 and January 2023, production in the neighboring country was 3.8 million bags. The volume represents 14% less than in relation to the previous period, which was almost 4.4 million bags.

Exports

The report showed that shipments from Colombia reached 11.2 million bags last year. In the previous cycle, the international market received 12.4 million bags. In the comparison of the month, the fall is even more significant, with 19% less bags exported. Last month, the volume shipped by Colômbai was 835 thousand bags.

“And in the coffee year, exports reached 3.7 million bags, 15% less compared to the 4.3 million posted abroad in the same previous period”, says the report.
