Mad cow: Russia halts beef imports from Para
Mar, 02, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202311
Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) suspended imports of beef produced in Para due to the confirmation of a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), popularly known as ‘mad cow.’
The decision came into effect on March 1 and included live animals, fresh and processed beef, and by-products.
It is not yet known whether the confirmed case is atypical or classic.
Atypical cases do not pose a risk to the Brazilian herd or animal protein consumers.
Last year, Russia was Brazil’s eighth largest importer of Brazilian beef, but the cargo that left the state of Pará was small.
Of the 37.9 thousand tons sent to the Russian market, only 511 left Pará.
In January this year, Brazil exported 160,200 tonnes of fresh, refrigerated, or frozen beef, Russia being the fifth largest importer, with 3,700 tonnes, but none of that volume left Pará.
Andrey Yurkov, Russia’s agricultural attaché in Brazil, said that the Russian government has not yet announced whether it will lift the embargo immediately after confirming the typing test results.
