Holdings disclose investment balance for the Port of Aratu

In June 2022, CS Portos, controlled by CS Infra of the Simpar Group, took over the operation of the ATU12 and ATU18 terminals at the Port of Aratu in Bahia. Since then, they claim to have invested around BRL 60 million in improvement and modernization projects. The company completed the first stage of renovation work at the end of February.
The amount invested allowed the company to restructure most of the fire network and carry out drainage, patio paving, and revitalization works on the warehouses of ATU12, which receives and handles fertilizers, sulfur, copper concentrate, iron ore, and magnesite.
Aside from implementing CSTV, a camera monitoring system, gatehouses were also built on the piers, restricting the access of vehicles and people, which did not previously exist.
ATU18, which will provide standard handling and storage services for solid bulk products and other related port services such as inspection, sorting, and weighting, the capacity for storage and cargo handling, should gain another 5 million tonnes after the 2nd phase of investments.
Next steps
The project’s second phase, which is set to begin in April and will involve more than R$600 million in investment, will concentrate on specific spaces and the modernization of all equipment.
According to the company, the creation of a new berth on ATU18, the structural renovation of TGS I, located on ATU12, the acquisition of ship loaders and unloaders, conveyor belts, the implementation of a new fertilizer warehouse, all paving and construction of scales, dumpers, and silos, as well as land routes, will be priorities from now on.
The construction of new headquarters is also on the project, with a cafeteria and storeroom, among other features. “Everything we’ve done has given the terminals a new face, including increased productivity and operational safety. But the upcoming phase will be even more important because we will put everything signed in our concession contract into action, which will significantly change how the Port operates and its scale,” says Marcos Tourinho.
Contract and investments
CS Portos won the auction at the end of 2020; in all, the company will invest, in the first three years of operation, more than BRL 627 million in improvement and modernization works, as provided for in the Basic Implementation Plan (PBI), approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure.
The ATU12 and ATU18 contracts last for 25 and 15 years, respectively. Both can be extended for up to 70 years. The terminals’ storage capacity and productivity are expected to more than quadruple.
