Brazil’s Paranagua inaugurates deeper draft and attracts larger ships

The Port of Paranaguá has received larger ships thanks to investments that brought operational gains, increasing cargo capacity in various segments.

In addition to enjoying better, safer conditions to navigate the access channel and berth at the port, the vessels can now depart with more cargo.

These advancements were made possible with the port’s latest draft increase, the maximum depth at which a vessel can remain submerged.

Ten of the 18 mooring berths in the Port of Paranagua went through draft increases in 2022.

Berths 205/206 (intended for general cargo) increased from 10.90 to 12 meters.

Berths 209 and 211 (intended for unloading imported solid bulk), which had a draft of 11.30 meters, now have a draft of 12.50.

The three berths in the East Export Corridor – 212, 213, and 214 – went from 12.50 to 12.80 meters.

And more recently, the berths dedicated to container operations – 216, 217, and 218 – varied from 12.30 to up to 13 meters in the draft, always following the safety standards determined by the port authority.

Vessels

The external berth of Cattalini’s private pier has the operational capacity to receive ships with a capacity of up to 70,000 tonnes of cargo and 229 meters in length overall.

The Container Terminal of Paranaguá (TCP) has only received ships measuring 335 meters but can accommodate vessels measuring up to 368 meters. The container ship APL Yangshan arrived at the terminal with a length of 347 meters and a capacity of up to 10,800 TEUs.

According to TCP, at the end of October 2022, the container ship Rio de Janeiro Express (335 meters), owned by the German shipowner Hapag Lloyd, docked at the terminal. The vessel had a transport capacity of up to 13,312 TEUs.

The largest bulk carriers received at the Port of Paranaguá measure around 293 meters and can carry more than 100,000 tonnes of cargo. For example, this is the case of the ship Maran Astronomer, loaded with 107,000 tonnes of soymeal in berth 214 of the East Export Corridor.

In addition to the Maran Astronomer, only two other vessels set sail with more than 100,000 tonnes of bulk in Paranaguá. One of them was E.R. Bayonne, which carried 103,403 tonnes in July 2020, and Pacific Myra, which carried 105,000 tonnes (April 2021).
