Santa Catarina-based cold storage regains halal cargo certification

The only cold storage facility integrated into a Brazilian port terminal, Iceport, was recertified for exporting products that meet the precepts of the Islamic religion, halal cargo. Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of halal goods, according to the latest State of the Global Islamic Economy Report. Halal products have been responsible for much of the growth in Brazilian chicken exports.
The United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Qatar are today’s primary destinations for Brazilian Halal cargo. The Iceport Warehouse handled 220,696 tonnes of goods in 2022. Of these, 63.4% were of animal origin (frozen poultry, beef, and pork), and 36.6% were of plant origin, primarily frozen potatoes. In 2022, chicken meat accounted for 67.24% of total protein shipped, with halal goods accounting for 12.77%.
Recertification delivers a strategic position in the market, bearing in mind the exponential growth of halal products worldwide, including among non-Muslims, due to the healthiness and sustainability associated with the processes adopted. Since 2020, Iceport has been certified in halal cargo by CDIAL, which ensures quality, safety, and traceability.
Currently, Iceport has authorization for exporting, from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (MAPA), to South Africa, Argentina, Canada, Chile, the Russian Federation, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Paraguay, the European Union, Uruguay and other countries that do not have specific requirements.
Halal cargoes
Generally speaking, halal cargo refers to either beef or chicken meat. However, the halal cargo handled at the Iceport facilities consists of 100% chicken meat. The entire process involved is designed specifically for these goods, thus avoiding any possibility of cross-contamination, from cargo reception to storage and shipment. The types of equipment employed also meet specific precepts, one being inspection temperature thermometers.
Iceport
The Iceport has a static storage capacity of 16,000 positions, and six stacker cranes store the cargo loads at a temperature of -25 degrees. The cold reinforcement tunnels reach -35 degrees.
There are pre-defined positions for each type of cargo divided into groups of pork, beef, poultry, fruits, and vegetables. Storage is handled by an automated system, the Warehouse Management System (WMS).
