Argentina has received approval to export pork to China from 25 of the country’s meat-packing plants. President Mauricio Macri broke the news with the following statement via a tweet yesterday:
“We have obtained approval to export pork to China, one of the world’s top consumers [of the meat],” Macri said.

Argentina’s agriculture secretary, Luis Etchevehere, has recently concluded a trip to the Asian country, leading a delegation of representatives from the farm industry. Etchevehere also elaborated the nature of the deal in a tweet:

Argentina is pushing the agenda to increase agricultural trade with China, especially soybean exports, as the South American country awaits an expected bumper harvest on the country’s Pampas grain belt.
DatamarNews reported that African swine flu in China is driving the country to look for alternative sources to meet local meat demands, giving Argentina an open window to export meat commodities to the Asian nation. Argentina’s exports to China reached US$3.48bn last year, of which more than 86% were from the agriculture sector according to Reuters.
