Brazilian poultry and pork exports reach record high in 2023

Brazilian poultry and pork exports have surged to record levels compared to the same period last year, a promising sign for the country’s meat industry. While beef exports are still below last year’s numbers, there is a growing trend toward recovery following a temporary embargo announced after a case of atypical mad cow disease. The embargo significantly affected the country’s exports, but the situation is now on the mend.

Poultry meat

Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of chicken meat, and in the first four months of this year, exports soared to an impressive 1.53 million tonnes, generating nearly $3 billion in revenue. According to Giovani Ferreira, Director of Journalism at Canal Rural, the growth in the sector has been on an upward trajectory since 2019, when 4 million tonnes of chicken meat were exported.

“For 2023, we expect chicken meat exports to continue to rise, with a new record above 4.5 million tonnes. So far, compared to the same period last year, exports have increased from 1.4 million to 1.53 million tonnes. We expect the number to reach 1.61 million tonnes by the end of April,” he said.

Pork

Meanwhile, Brazil’s pork industry has also seen significant growth in recent years, with export revenue rising considerably, as shown in the government’s record. In 2020, 660,000 tonnes of pork were exported; in 2021 and 2022, that number surpassed the 1 million tonne mark.

“In the first four months of 2023, Brazil has already shipped 310,000 tonnes of pork, which could reach 350,000 by the end of April. This is the best four-month period in the history of Brazilian pork exports, surpassing the 311,000 tonnes exported in 2022. China, the largest buyer of Brazilian pork, saw a decline in market share, dropping from 48% in 2022 to about 40% in 2023. This indicates that Brazil is diversifying its markets and becoming more secure to operate internationally, bringing benefits to the entire production chain,” Ferreira explained.

Beef

In contrast, Brazilian beef exports have faced challenges due to a temporary embargo imposed by China following a case of atypical mad cow disease. Nevertheless, the Director of Journalism at Canal Rural, Giovani Ferreira, remains optimistic, noting that Brazilian beef exports have risen in recent years, reaching almost 2 million tonnes in 2022, with a spectacular performance in recent April shipments. Despite the setback, Brazil’s meat industry is showing resilience and remains a key player in the global market.
