Brazil’s Portos RS, Port of Rotterdam to ink green hydrogen deal

The Portos RS, a public company responsible for managing the port system in Rio Grande do Sul state, is moving forward with a project of strategic importance. It will sign a collaboration agreement with the port of Rotterdam to develop activities in the green hydrogen field. The deal will be sealed during the World Hydrogen Summit 2023, to be held in the Dutch city between May 9 and 11.
Representatives from the Porto RS and the Rio Grande do Sul government are heading to Europe to explore green hydrogen initiatives, with a particular focus on the production and use of the fuel. State Secretary of the Environment and Infrastructure Marjorie Kauffmann explains that the delegation will be attending a meeting in the Netherlands to learn about various aspects of green hydrogen production, including bases for producing the fuel, equipment, markets, and other related topics.
The Porto RS also plans to sign an agreement with the port of Rotterdam to exchange experiences and use common markets for green hydrogen. It is possible to obtain pure hydrogen and use it for activities such as storing and generating energy through fuel cells (in small, medium, and large vehicles such as cars and trucks) and as an input for steel production, chemical, petrochemical, agricultural, food and beverage, and building heating.
The port of Rio Grande is seen as an excellent location to produce this fuel, thanks to its wind energy generation and ideal logistics conditions. The partnership with the Dutch could put Rio Grande at the center of the discussion on the renewable energy agenda and make it a great hub for renewable energies.
President of Portos RS, Cristiano Klinger, believes that the public company is working hard to create a favorable business environment to attract these investments, and signing an agreement with the Dutch is a step in the right direction. Marjorie Kauffmann also stresses the importance of diversifying the energy matrix and using clean sources to protect the environment.
During the 18th GD Sul Forum held in Porto Alegre, Kauffmann highlighted an increase in electricity generation capacity through photovoltaic solar modules, as consumers decided to adopt the solution before implementing Law 14,300. Furthermore, she predicts an expansion of the photovoltaic matrix in the state, as it has the potential to trigger technological evolution, particularly in smarter cities that involve energy and mobility.
The state secretary of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Simone Stülp, agrees that renewable and clean energy is a global focus topic and that Rio Grande do Sul has the potential to advance towards a higher value-added and high-productivity economy. In 2022, 51% of the energy produced in the state was through hydroelectric power, 23% from wind power, 15% fossil, and 11% photovoltaic, but there is a growing trend towards clean and renewable energy sources.
