Thanks to the improvements made in recent months, the Grain Terminal at the Port of São Francisco do Sul has achieved a new record: in the first four months of the year, it received 586,000 tonnes of grains, mostly soybeans. This number represents a 22% increase compared to the same period in 2022, when 481,000 tonnes arrived at the port.
The harbor in northern Santa Catarina exports 80% of all soybeans produced in the state, with China being the leading destination country. The Terminal occupies an area equivalent to four football fields within the port complex and has two large warehouses from which the grains are transported to the ships via conveyors.
Governor Jorginho Mello commented on the R$ 10 million investments that have been made in port infrastructure. “These resources improve the handling capacity and will contribute to achieving more and more records. We invest in our ports because we know their importance to our economy,” he said.
According to the port’s president, Cleverton Vieira, planning revitalization works was essential to achieving the growth goals. “Based on the forecast of a record harvest, the Port administration, together with the Terminal’s staff, sought to ensure that grain loading will take place quickly, reinforcing Governor Jorginho Mello’s commitment to offering the best possible service.”
Vieira explains that in March, the weighbridge for trucks was expanded to accommodate larger vehicles: it went from 20 to 25 meters. In the past, B-train trucks had to be weighed in two stages. Now it can be done in one, speeding up the flow of vehicles.
“The Port has been modernizing and maintaining the Terminal’s structure with constant investments. Proof of this is the refurbishment of internal roads with the implementation of rigid pavement suitable for the heavy traffic of trucks within the premises,” said the port’s president, referring to the renewal of all the internal paving at the Grain Terminal.
The railway line that serves the Terminal has also been undergoing improvements since the beginning of the year.
Approximately 500 meters of the railway network are being revitalized, including 300 meters inactive since 2019. The work streamlines train maneuvers, allowing the use of two different tracks: one for entering loaded wagons and another for exiting empty ones.
