Ports of Rio de Janeiro and Itaguaí gain new set of thermal cameras

Rio de Janeiro’s port authority PortosRio has completed the installation of state-of-the-art thermal cameras at the Ports of Rio de Janeiro and Itaguaí. These advanced cameras are used to monitor the facilities and waterway traffic. The Port Authority’s investment was approximately R$ 1.5 million, carried out through bidding.

Carlos Cerveira, Superintendent of Information Technology at PortosRio, commented on the placement of thermal cameras at organized ports: “The thermal cameras were installed at strategic points under the responsibility of the Port Authority, including access channels, anchorage areas, and berths. This comprehensive coverage allows us to identify possible misconduct within our jurisdiction.”

Regarding the control of waterway traffic, Cerveira highlighted the benefits of this technology, such as improved security, accident reduction, and enhanced operational capacity, especially during night operations. “With thermal cameras, we can detect small vessels that do not have equipment like the Automatic Identification System (AIS), and that may interfere with the maneuvers of large ships,” said Cerveira.

“The images captured by thermal cameras are clearer at night, in low-light environments, and even during rainy conditions, as visual limitations do not affect them. This greatly assists in our efforts to prevent incidents and illicit activities, enabling greater accuracy in the early detection of suspicious activities, rapid response to potential threats, and fewer false alarms,” explained José Tadeu Diniz, Superintendent of the Port Security.

The Port of Rio de Janeiro has facilities certified under the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code), an international security standard established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). To obtain this certification, the facilities must meet rigorous monitoring and access control requirements, in addition to undergoing regular inspections.
