The Piauí state government’s commitment to completing the dredging of the access channel to the Port of Luís Correia, specifically the area designated for the fishing terminal, by December has attracted the attention of international logistics company Ashley Global and mining company Lion Mining. They are considering utilizing the new infrastructure for exporting iron ore extracted from operational deposits in Piripiri.
Cristina Araújo, CEO of Companhia de Terminais Alfandegados do Piauí (Porto PI), and Álvaro Nolleto, president of Export Processing Zone (EPZ) Piauí, met with businessmen Jader Fernandes from Lion Mining and Idemaro Prazeres from Ashley Global on the 1st of the month to discuss future export plans. Subsequently, the investors took a technical visit to the port aboard a Brazilian Navy vessel.
The businessmen’s proposal involves initiating the export of ores extracted from the Piripiri deposits using the access channel of the fishing terminal. Cargo would be transshipped to a large ship anchored seven miles off the coast. “Piauí is attracting companies that want to invest, and the first visit is from Ashley Global, a major port logistics operator in England, interested in becoming one of the operators of an ore terminal in Piauí,” explained Cristina Araújo.
According to Porto PI’s president, this new demand further emphasizes the state government’s efforts to identify a suitable location for a mineral terminal as part of a new phase in constructing the Luís Correia Port Complex. “The Piauí government, through Porto PI and other technical bodies, is committed to assessing this new business demand in the search for a viable solution for this new project,” concluded the manager.
Port works
Governor Rafael Fonteles announced the completion of the first stage of the Port of Luís Correia, which includes the Fishing Terminal and dredging of the access channel to the Igaraçu River. The expected completion date is December of this year. The state government will invest R$ 90 million, the largest amount ever allocated by the government for public works.
