The tugboat Hércules III separated from a convoy of 20 barges laden with 32,000 tonnes of soybeans while navigating the Paraguay River en route to San Lorenzo, Argentina, departing from Puerto Guyrati, Paraguay. The incident was reported by abc.com.
According to the information currently available, the cargo was left adrift in the river forcing the captain of a support vessel to conduct rescue and regrouping maneuvers. Consequently, two barges ran aground, obstructing the shipping channel for several hours.
Another tugboat swiftly arrived at the scene and successfully docked with three of the barges. With their assistance, the Hércules managed to recover all the loose barges and is currently situated in the Curaypayty area, where divers are assessing potential damage.
Captain Luis Torres, the head of the naval prefecture of Pilar, suggested that a collision with a sandbar in the region might have caused the incident. It is essential to highlight that none of the barges were at risk of sinking.
