Brazil’s Ministry of Ports and Airports of the Federal Government has officially confirmed a new 25-year delegation agreement for the Port of Itajaí during a meeting held on Wednesday (07). The agreement ensures that the public city-owned port authority will continue to manage the terminal while private parties will keep specific leases for 35 years. The deal will be signed later this month once the municipality completes the required structural changes to convert the Port’s Superintendence into a public company.
Mayor Volnei Morastoni expressed his excitement: “We are thrilled to receive this fantastic news for our city and port in Brasília. The confirmation of the new delegation agreement, which we plan to sign later this month, ensures essential legal security for the current tender process and the future tender to select the permanent private operator. This operator will be responsible for making the necessary investments to drive significant growth and development of the terminal.”
As part of the new delegation agreement, the municipality has to elaborate a public company proposal to manage the Port of Itajaí for the next 25 years. The proposal is expected to be submitted for consideration next week, followed by signing the agreement with the Ministry of Ports and Airports. All procedures are anticipated to be completed later this month.
Fábio da Veiga, the port superintendent, emphasized the importance of transforming the Port Superintendence into a public company, stating, “We are now finalizing this step to secure the delegation agreement, which involves the transformation of the Port Superintendence. The procedures will be expedited, and after this process, Minister Márcio França has committed to expediting the signature of the definitive lease notice for the Port of Itajaí. This will enable the expansion of the port, nearly doubling its size and equipping it with modern facilities, ensuring decades of economic strength and social well-being for the people of Itajaí.”
The newly established delegation agreement between the Federal Government and the municipality will remain in effect for 25 years, while the lease tender for the four berths at the Itajaí terminal will span 35 years.
Minister Márcio França stated, “We have agreed to delegate the Port of Itajaí to the municipality for another 25 years, allowing the terminal to resume its operations. We are also committed to streamlining the final leasing process for the new operator of the Port of Itajaí.”
The delegation meeting in Brasília on Wednesday included Mayor Volnei Morastoni, Superintendent Fábio da Veiga, the first lady of the municipality, Nausicaa Morastoni, executive advisor of the Port, Silvia Wanderlinde, and Jucelino dos Santos Sora, the general director of engineering for the terminal.
