City officials to ask federal government for longer leasing period at Itajaí Port

The city government of Itajaí and the superintendence of the port are keen on requesting the Federal Government an extension on the terminal’s temporary lease. This request came after no company expressed interest in continuing operations under the current terms, provoking the need for a new private operator to be chosen for the next 35 years through public notice.
On Wednesday afternoon (21), the request was officially issued. According to Fábio da Veiga, the superintendent of the Port of Itajaí, the lack of bidding interest was expected due to the short duration of the temporary contract, which lasted only six months. “The market had been indicating that this outcome was likely. Therefore, we have contacted the Federal Government, and conversations are underway to find a solution. This could involve expediting the final public notice or providing a longer contractual period for the transition. The investments required are substantial, and six months is insufficient for amortization,” commented Fábio da Veiga.
The process of submitting bids for the temporary lease of the Port of Itajaí was observed by authorities and port community members. Deputy Mayor Marcelo Sodré participated in the proceedings and emphasized the Municipality’s commitment to finding a solution with the Federal Government.
“Undoubtedly, if this were the final notice for a lease spanning another 35 years, we wouldn’t be facing this situation. Hence, we will exert every effort and request the Federal Government’s support to expedite our port’s return to full operation. This is a top priority on the government’s agenda,” Sodré highlighted.
The Federal Government’s Ministry of Ports and Airports recently confirmed signing a new delegation agreement for the Port of Itajaí, extending its operation for another 25 years. This measure ensures that the Public and Municipal Port Authority will continue managing the terminal, while a private sector entity will hold an operating lease for 35 years.
