Orange juice exports rise 28.3% in the Port of Santos

The Port of Santos, the main exporter of orange juice in the country, has witnessed a remarkable 28.3% increase in shipments of the product during the first four months of this year compared to the same period in 2022. From January to April 2023, a total of 946.8 thousand tonnes departed from the São Paulo-based port, as opposed to 738,300 tonnes last year. This upward trend helped the liquid bulk sales sector generated US$2 billion (approximately R$10 billion) in 2022.

According to data from the Port Authority of Santos (APS), 2.6 million tons of orange juice were exported last year, marking a nearly 10% rise from 2021 (2.4 million tons).

As stated by the port complex manager, Santos serves as Brazil’s primary outlet for national orange juice production, with 91% of it using three terminals dedicated to liquid bulk operations, specifically citrus juices. Two of these terminals, Citrosuco and Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC), are located on the Right Bank within the organized port area, while the third is the Private Use Terminal (TUP) Cutrale, situated on the Left Bank. Collectively, they possess the capacity to handle 4 million tonnes.

The Port Authority clarified that the product is predominantly shipped as liquid bulk, meaning they rely on specialized vessels and specific terminals, with a smaller portion transported in drums inside containers. According to APS, Brazil takes the lead in orange juice production and exports, accounting for approximately 60% of the global total and commanding 80% of international trade in the product.

Ivam Jardim, a consultant from Agência Porto Consultoria, emphasized the fundamental and strategic role of the Port of Santos in the orange juice trade. He further underscored the significance of the Santos complex in the production chain and the broader economy.

“The Port of Santos plays a pivotal role in the orange juice export trade, a strategic sector for São Paulo and Brazil. Such influence cannot be measured solely in terms of the port-related aspects; it goes far beyond that. An entire colossal production chain, which generates substantial tax revenues and thousands of direct and indirect jobs, relies on the exports facilitated by the three terminals equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Brazil is a technological pioneer in this field. These terminals handled over US$2 billion in 2022.”

Companies

The French LDC, whose operations span 70 countries, explained in a statement that it maintains an extensive logistics chain, with three processing terminals located in Matão (SP), Bebedouro (SP), and Paranavaí (PR) in Brazil. Their two port terminals, in Santos and Ghent in Belgium, play an integral role in this process. “This allows us to distribute orange, Sicilian lemon, and Tahiti lime juices worldwide, along with various derivative producRegardingms of the export process, LDC explained that the fruits are transported to their factories, where the juice is produced. Subsequently, the juice is transported in bulk or drums to the Port of Santos 2ith the aid of trucks. At the port, the juice is stored and transferred to ships within refrigerated chambers, ensuring it remains protected from the external environment.
