Paranagua Port identifies substantial increase in corn, canjica kernel exports

Corn and canjica, a variety of white maize typical in Brazilian cuisine, have had a significant increase in exports lately, especially through the Paranagua Port.

The Container Terminal of Paranaguá (TCP) disclosed expressive figures. From January to May 2022, 392 TEUs of corn were exported. In the same period this year, that number jumped to 1,181 TEUs, representing a 201% increase.

Popcorn kernels experienced a growth of 196%, going from 381 TEUs in the first five months of 2022 to 1,129 TEUs from January to May 2023. Additionally, canjica kernels saw an increase of 29% (from 24 to 31 TEUs), and rice had an increase of 49% (from 39 to 58 TEUs). The main exporters of these products in 2023 were Egypt (corn and popcorn), Cape Verde (canjica), and Angola (rice).

JB Litoral interviewed Giovanni Guidolim, TCP’s commercial, logistics, and customer service manager, who explained the main reasons behind this phenomenon.

According to him, this year’s logistical scenario has been highly favorable for exporting commodities like corn and rice. “The price of ocean freight has decreased, making containers a viable option for transporting these products. Ships have an average occupancy of 80%, which means there is available space to load the containers,” he explains.

Therefore, this combination of factors, including freight costs and available space on ships, has increased exports. Another important factor is the harvest, as the rise in agricultural production has contributed to the boost.

The Paranaguá port complex

Why does Paranaguá excel in this context? Giovanni Guidolim points out that logistical costs influence how agribusiness cargo behaves internationally, as they generally have lower values. Paranaguá has a port complex that perfectly meets these demands.

“The Paranaguá Container Terminal, along with its partners, provides all the necessary infrastructure for receiving, storing, and exporting cargoes like those. The low terminal occupancy and the operation’s flexibility and efficiency set Paranaguá apart in this market,” he says.
