Toyota heads for new export record

Brazilian vehicle exports dropped 7.7% in the first half compared to the same period in 2022. Only 227 thousand units arrived in other countries, a monthly average of 37.8 thousand. The drop compared to the previous year is due, according to Anfavea, to the weak performance of important markets, such as Chile and Colombia, in particular, and also to the high comparison base of last year.
Even so, some companies celebrate the pace of their shipments in 2023. This is the case of Toyota, which has been leading exports in the year and is on the way to at least repeating the historical record reached last year, when it exported 95,400 vehicles, a jump of more than 60% over the 2021 result.
From January to June this year, 49,200 units of the Etios models — whose production is exclusively for foreign markets —, Yaris, Corolla Cross and Corolla models left the country. Alone, the brand accounted for more than 20% of all Brazilian vehicles sold abroad in 2023.
“Toyota’s leadership in exports demonstrates the confidence of the Latin American and Caribbean markets in the company”, celebrates Rafael Chang, president of the Brazilian operation, who emphasizes exports as an escape valve for negative fluctuations in the domestic market.
Toyota recently presented the Corolla Cross hybrid in Colombia with the aim of promoting ethanol as a carbon-neutral energy path and Toyota’s flex hybrid technology.
“Colombia, as the seventh largest sugarcane producer in the world, is increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability and energy efficiency. In this sense, Toyota’s hybrid technology offers a highly advantageous solution”, comments Roberto Braun, Director of Government Relations and Regulation at Toyota do Brasil.
In October last year, the automaker had already launched the Hybrid Flex Technology pilot project in India, a first step by Toyota in that country also to promote hybrid flex technology and ethanol.
Toyota also exports engines produced at the plant in Porto Feliz, SP. Since September last year, 17,000 M20A engines, which equip the Corolla and Corolla Cross, have been shipped to North America.
