The movement of vehicles at the Port of Suape grew by 59% in the first half of this year, compared to the same period last year. From January to June, 42,123 cars passed through the port, in export, import and transhipment operations, against 26,542 in the same period of 2022.
This year, the month with the highest vehicle handling record was April, with 11,707 units. From the 1st of July until this Friday morning, the estimate is for the loading and unloading of 8,686 vehicles, of different brands and sizes, totaling seven large operations of this type. In Brazil, vehicle production increased by 3.7% in the first half, against the same period in 2022.
Two more movements in the last week reinforce the sector’s growth trend in Suape. On Thursday (27), the ro-ro ship Opal Leader, flying the flag of the Bahamas, embarked 452 units bound for the Port of Santa Marta, in the department of Magdalena, on the north coast of Colombia.
On Friday (28), the Baltimore Highway, flying the Panamanian flag, handled 1,420 units throughout the day. It then departed towards the Port of Cartagena, in the department of Bolívar, also on the Colombian coast and one of the main tourist destinations in South America.
“It is an expanding sector, consolidating the strategic position of the Port of Suape in the region and on the American continent. Part of this volume of vehicles comes from the transhipment operations of units manufactured in Argentina and Uruguay and distributed to other countries from our docks. The hub’s growth expectations are very good, mainly with the use of new technologies and improvement of the infrastructure of the vehicle yards, aiming at optimizing operations”, points out the CEO of Suape, Marcio Guiot.
TECHNOLOGY
To ensure efficiency and agility in this type of operation, innovative technologies are being implemented in Suape. Last April, the state-owned port company joined the Video Analytics solution connected with 5G AS, to optimize logistics in the port’s vehicle yards. The successful initiative took place in partnership with Embratel/Claro and the National Secretariat for Ports and Waterway Transport.
Suape has three public yards for car storage and an annual handling capacity of 250,000 cars.
