UN: Brazil has long way to go in terms of non-traditional fuels

A preliminary study conducted by the United Nations Global Compact in Brazil, as a starting point for a new working group, revealed a significant gap: none of the Brazilian ports that participated in the investigation are equipped to handle non-traditional fuels. Merely two ports are creating conditions to accommodate vessels that run on biomethane, ammonia, biogas, and green hydrogen.
National Reality Unveiled
The study also shines a light on the national scenario, revealing that 91% of the assessed ports lack incentive campaigns aimed at curbing emissions from maritime transport. Additionally, 67% of these ports have yet to establish energy efficiency and decarbonization targets.
In response, Carlo Pereira, CEO of the UN Global Compact in Brazil, emphasizes maritime transport and port operations’ pivotal role in achieving carbon neutrality. He stresses that while Brazil possesses an inherent potential to strive in this new economy, proactive efforts are essential to transform this potential into a competitive advantage. Pereira underscores the urgency for Brazil to expedite decarbonization within the maritime sector.
Strategic Approach
As part of the UN Global Compact’s strategic Water Action Platform and Climate Platform initiatives, the forthcoming efforts will center on the companies that are part of the initiative’s network in Brazil.
In a statement sent to the Santos-based “A Tribuna” daily, the Port Authority of Santos (APS) stated that “Despite acknowledging our role in this market, we believe that partnerships like the one formed with the Global Compact and the organizations involved in the working group are critical for the dissemination of innovative practices and expanding the reach of effective implementation of the sustainable development goals.”
