Brazilian poultry sales to Arabs expected to grow in 2023

Brazilian poultry sales to the Arab countries and the halal market are expected to grow this year. So said meat lobby ABPA on Wednesday (16) presenting its projections for this year, and the reason is a decrease in output and exports of Brazil’s leading competitors, particularly Turkey. Turkish exports reached 297,000 tonnes from January to June last year but fell to 200,000 year to date through June. Turkey is a supplier to the Arab countries. In South America, Chile has also posted a decrease in exports.
Due to this decrease, the head of ABPA, Ricardo Santin, expects sales to Arab countries to increase. “The halal market posted very good results. We believe Iraq and Iran (which is not Arab) will dramatically increase this year due to the absence of Turkey. When I see Turkey losing nearly 90,000 in seven months of exports, it indicates that a market is not receiving goods from Turkey. So we see room to grow in countries like the United Arab Emirates. But it’s still strong,” said Santin. According to ABPA data, poultry exports to Iraq hiked 218.7% year to date through July compared to the same period last year, to 98,000 tonnes.
ABPA estimates indicate Brazil could produce between 14.8 million and 14.95 million tonnes of poultry this year, an increase of up to 3% over 2022, and export between 5.1 million and 5.2 million tonnes, with an expansion of 8% from last year. The projection is for monthly exports at 437,000 tonnes, on average.
Santin also stated Brazil has not registered, so far, cases of bird flu in poultry commercial plants. Of the 79 cases reported in the country, 77 were in wild birds and two in poultry for subsistence production. For this reason, Japan embargoed purchases from the states of Espírito Santo and Santa Catarina, where cases of domestic birds were registered. Imports from Espírito Santo have already resumed.
“The Brazilian government has been working, changing the certifications from a free country to a free region, zone or compartment,” said the president of ABPA concerning the work carried out with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to segregate possible cases of the disease and avoid generalization of the entire country.

Eggs & pigs
Exports of Brazilian eggs could reach 32,500 tonnes this year, equivalent to 1% of national production. The product has the UAE among its leading importers, in a volume that reached 4,300 tonnes from January to July 2022 but dropped to 808 tonnes in the same period this year because, according to Santin, Brazil increased exports to other markets. The UAE also expanded their pork imports by 99% in the last 10 years, a product not consumed by Muslims. In 2022, 13,000 tonnes were exported to the Arab country. In 2013, 6,500 tonnes were shipped to the UAE.
