Brazil’s 2023/24 sugarcane harvest to outperform past forecasts

In view of a surge in sugarcane crop productivity, Brazil’s National Supply Company (Conab) has revised its forecast for 2023/24 sugarcane crushing from 637.1 million tonnes in April to 652.9 million tonnes. If this volume is confirmed, there will be a remarkable 6.9% expansion compared to the previous season.
The most recent data reveals an average yield of 78,000 kilograms per hectare, a notable increase from the April prediction of 75,700.
In terms of land allocation, there is a minor 0.1% decline compared to 2022/23, with 8.29 million hectares dedicated to sugarcane cultivation. This reduction is most pronounced in the Southeast region, where the country’s sugarcane plantations are concentrated (comprising 63.1% of the total).
Despite this reduction, Conab anticipates a 6.3% upswing in the Southeast’s harvested volume, totaling 412.15 million tons, primarily attributed to strong productivity figures.
Sugar and ethanol
Sugarcane’s elevated crushing rates are poised to boost sugar production across the nation, leading Conab to increase its production estimate from 38.8 million to 40.9 million tons.
Moreover, the anticipated production of sugarcane ethanol currently stands at 27.7 billion liters, a marginal rise from the April forecast of 27.5 billion liters.
Interestingly, the production of ethanol derived from corn has been projected at 6.1 billion liters, signifying a significant 37.2% growth between harvests. This figure exceeds Conab’s previous estimate of 5.6 billion liters.
