Approaching its 10th anniversary, the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) of Ceará, which is part of the Pecém Complex, beat the throughput mark of 78 million tonnes of cargo in its nearly decade-long history in the last month of July. Since August 2013, the Ceará free trade zone has increasingly solidified its role as a significant tool for the economic and industrial development of the state.
In total, ZPE Ceará has moved 78,783,866 tonnes throughout its history, averaging nearly 8 million tonnes per year. Notably, the “Ceará em Comex” foreign trade study, conducted by the International Business Center of Ceará (CIN), indicates that in 2022, approximately 50% of the state’s exports correspond to goods produced within the EPZ, specifically at ArcelorMittal Pecém, a steel mill located in Sector 1 of the free trade zone.
“There is no doubt that the export agenda of the state was profoundly transformed by EPZ Ceará, which, as a public policy, has brilliantly fulfilled its role in promoting the economic and industrial development of the region. Most of Ceará’s exports, sent to various parts of the world via the Port of Pecém, originate from our gates. Our goal is to continue contributing to the generation of employment and income for the people of Ceará, making ZPE increasingly efficient,” highlights Eduardo Neves, President of ZPE Ceará.
FEATURED PRODUCTS
This year, from January to July, 5,689,179 tonnes passed through the gates of EPZ Ceará, a 13.1% growth compared to the same period in 2022. Iron ore is the highlight, responsible for 2.63 million tonnes. Following closely are the steel plates produced by the steel mill, with 1.76 million tonnes, and coal (1.20 million tonnes). These products have been instrumental in achieving the historic milestone for ZPE Ceará, where companies such as Phoenix do Pecém and White Martins are also located.
“To move nearly 80 million tonnes in 10 years signifies more than just numbers. It signifies economic, social, and technological development for the state, the qualification of individuals and employability, and the modernization of companies and structures; it represents a public policy that was adopted and is proving successful. We experience the magnificence of ZPE Ceará daily and dedicate all efforts to ensure its continued success,” emphasizes Karina Bzyl, Operations Manager of ZPE Ceará.
PRIMARY DESTINATION
ZPE Ceará can send and receive goods from key points around the world, including the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, thanks to a seamlessly integrated logistics network with the Port of Pecém, which is only six kilometers away. In fact, Americans will be the primary importers of Ceará’s EPZ products in 2023, having received 669.4 thousand tonnes already.
