ESE2 service marks partnership beetwen Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and COSCO Shipping Lines

On Friday, September 15, the presence of the “Xin Nan Tong” ship, docked at the Rio Brasil Terminal in the Port of Rio de Janeiro, inaugurated the ESE2 service, connecting Europe to the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. This new route marks the new collaboration between Rio Brasil Terminal, a part of the ICTSI Group (International Container Terminal Services), and the Chinese company COSCO Shipping Lines. Entrepreneurs, politicians, and representatives from various sectors participated in this moment and praised the initiative’s success.

Anders Kjeldsen, Senior Vice President and Head of ICTSI Americas, bears witness to the organization’s growth, which has become one of the leading references in the global port industry, with operations in 19 countries. He believes that the date symbolizes the beginning of a new chapter, a new journey.

For Jeffrey Ge, Deputy General Manager of COSCO Shipping Lines, the focus, in addition to promoting economic and commercial exchanges, is to ensure supply chain stability. He highlights that the Europe to East South America route has a capacity of 4,500 TEUs per ship.

As a major exporter of crude oils or bituminous minerals, Rio de Janeiro also plays a significant role in importing petroleum products, automobiles and parts, electronics, machinery and industrial equipment, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

Alvaro Savio, CEO of PortosRio, states that this is a significant milestone for the Port of Rio de Janeiro and will also greatly benefit the neighboring state of Minas Gerais.

Partnership agreement

On the same occasion, Rio Brasil Terminal and COSCO Shipping Lines signed a preliminary contract to operate CLIA Pouso Alegre. This logistics corridor encompasses the supply chain, such as empty container yards and customs warehouses in the state of Minas Gerais.

Kathleen Garcia, Deputy Secretary for Economic Development of the State of Minas Gerais, views the Asian participation in the operation of the Brazilian inland corridor positively. She believes it will instill confidence in Chinese companies to invest in the state and acquire local products.
