Bird flu: Japan suspends imports of poultry meat from Mato Grosso do Sul

Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) confirmed that the Japanese government has temporarily suspended imports of eggs, live poultry, poultry meat, and byproducts from the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. According to Mapa, the notification was received on Tuesday (August 19).
The suspension follows the confirmation of new detected cases in the city of Bonito in a domestic poultry farm. Mapa stated that trade with other states continues.
Impact
Brazil is the world leader in chicken exports, accounting for 35% of the global market. According to data from AgroStat (the Brazilian Agribusiness Foreign Trade Statistics system), Mato Grosso do Sul exports 18.4% of its production of fresh chicken meat to Japan.
Sanitary Measures
According to the Brazilian government, sanitary measures are being implemented by the Official Veterinary Service to contain and eradicate the outbreak. Surveillance actions on domestic poultry flocks are also being intensified in the region. According to Mapa, there are no industrial poultry farms in epidemiological risk.
