Brazil’s Minister of Ports announces permanent forum to address Port of Santos top concerns

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, announced that he would establish a series of meetings to address priority issues for the Port of Santos. The announcement was made during his visit to the region on Thursday, September 21st.

In addition to confirming Anderson Pomini’s continued presidency of the Port Authority of Santos (APS), the minister made it clear that he plans to remain very close to the largest port in the southern hemisphere. “[There will be] a Permanent Forum to address the main concerns of the Port of Santos. We will establish a schedule and maintain a dialogue to expedite the demands of the Port of Santos,” said Silvio Costa Filho.

The minister embarked on an extensive visit, starting with an overflight to become familiar with the entire Port of Santos, always accompanied by President Anderson Pomini, National Ports Secretary Mariana Pescatori, and the ministry’s team. He was received at the Port Captaincy by Rear Admiral Robledo de Lemos Costa e Sá. Later, he participated in a press conference at the APS headquarters, where he also met with representatives of workers’ unions operating in the Port of Santos, taking note of all the categories’ demands.

Following this, Costa Filho was received at Santos City Hall by Mayor Rogério Santos and federal deputies Paulo Alexandre Barbosa, Carlos Alberto da Cunha, and Jonas Donizette; state deputies Caio França, Solange Freitas, and Paulo Corrêa, as well as regional business leaders, port community members, councilors, and municipal secretaries, among other authorities. During this meeting, he received greetings for his visit and for keeping Anderson Pomini in charge of the APS.

From Santos City Hall, Silvio Costa walked along the first section of the Santos Port dock, where seven disused warehouses will be restored and transformed into the Valongo Park, a tourist facility featuring restaurants, cultural spaces, leisure areas, and professional development spaces.

The delegation then sailed through the port channel to the Santos Yacht Club and traveled by car to Guarujá City Hall, where Mayor Válter Sumam discussed topics such as the necessary works on the Left Bank Perimeter and the installation of the Metropolitan Airport. Silvio Costa Filho visited this airport and was excited by the Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company’s (Infraero) presentation on the work to open the century-old Air Base runway for commercial flights. From there, the minister took a helicopter to São Paulo.

During the visit, the minister signed commitments related to investments for the second phase of the Left Bank Perimeter Avenue in Guarujá, the construction of four more berths in the Alemoa dock, and the initiation of studies for the expansion of the port polygon boundary, including a 400,000-square-meter area in the Alemoa region.
