Brazil carries out first export of zebu embryos produced in vitro to Peru

Last week, Brazil achieved a significant milestone by conducting its first-ever export of in vitro-produced Zebu embryos to Peru. This achievement not only contributes to the genetic improvement of Peru’s livestock but also enhances international trade related to Zebu cattle. Brahman Braúnas sent a shipment of 125 Brahman breed embryos to the National Institute of Agricultural Innovation (INIA) in Peru.
The INIA, Peru’s equivalent of Embrapa, will conduct research related to genetic progress and also multiply the embryos for distribution to local breeders, thereby spreading genetic diversity and aiding in the development of Peru’s livestock.
“The donor cattle spent six months at a genetics center, producing and collecting the embryos. The acquisition by INIA is part of a government project promoting livestock development in the country. This is also a significant achievement for Brazil since we can now export semen and embryos to Peru,” explained Angela Peres, an official from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), who facilitated the negotiations between the two countries.
The export shipment resulted from a year and a half of concerted effort, as described by Marci Guimarães, a spokesperson for Brahman Braúnas.
“We worked closely with the Brazilian embassy in Lima, the capital of Peru, and with Geneal, the only Brazilian center authorized to export embryos to Peru, along with other stakeholders in the industry. The embryos were collected from the most outstanding donors in our herd, and we are very pleased with this outcome. The next step is to open up the market for live animals, and we are also working towards achieving that goal,” she noted.
Geneal and Brahman Braúnas participate in the Brazilian Cattle project, developed by the Brazilian Association of Zebu Cattle Breeders (ABCZ) in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil). This project, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023, plays a crucial role in disseminating Zebu cattle genetics worldwide.
