Port of Montevideo to receive crane to operate in public spaces

The Port of Montevideo is expecting to receive a new crane by the end of 2019. The equipment will be used mainly for handling Paraguayan transshipment cargo.

According to the president of the National Ports Administration (ANP) of Uruguay, Alberto Díaz, two companies that are not present in the Port of Montevideo are competing for the concession of the crane.

The equipment will be used in the public spaces at the Port of Montevideo, including in the C and D Piers. The inauguration of these docks was announced by the Minister of Transport and Public Works of the country, Victor Rossi, for June 14.

The new crane will be a mobile multi-purpose crane similar to the one that operates in the Port of Fray Bentos, also in Uruguay, that will allow handling of containers, bulk, and heavy goods.

“The acquisition arises from the analysis that we were failing to fully meet the needs of Paraguayan and cabotage vessels. The diagnosis was that private operators do not provide enough equipment to deal with this business which, to a certain extent, harms us,” explains Diaz.

It is worth remembering that the two cranes that were out of service will be discarded. The new equipment meets the evolution of the market.

“We are not deciding to operate directly, what we are saying is that we will operate in the same way as we are doing (cranes managed by agency employees); and all our operators who rent their crane services know this,” says Díaz.

Investments

On June 14 the expansion of Pier C and Pier D will be inaugurated at the Port of Montevideo. The initiative, which is classified as one of the strategic port development projects, required U$148.7m of investments in Pier C and US$82.5m in Pier D, totaling U$231.2m, including dredging works.
