Carlo Porro, co-founder and CEO of Agrícola Famosa, the world’s largest producer and exporter of melons, is among the major users of the Port of Mucuripe. The port recently faced criticism from transportation and logistics industry leaders due to delays of up to 36 hours in the delivery and collection of containers.
The criticisms reported by Diário do Nordeste on the 27th primarily focused on what transporters referred to as a lack of port infrastructure and equipment at CGA Terminals, a French company responsible for managing the Mucuripe Container Terminal.
On the same day, the Ceará Ports Company (CDC) issued a statement confirming that due to the significant increase in fruit exports from Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte this year, vehicle movement did indeed grow twofold at two different moments of the week.
The chart below displays Brazilian fruit exports (HS 0800-0812) between Jan 2019 and Aug 2023. The data is from DataLiner,

On Sunday, the 29th, Carlo Porro sent a message to CDC President Lúcio Ferreira Gomes, the full text of which is as follows:
“First, I am satisfied with the services provided by the Port of Fortaleza, including CMA Terminals, a subsidiary of CMA-CGM, one of the world’s leading container operators.
“I am familiar with the company’s expertise, and they have already started substantial investments in the Port of Fortaleza, with more than R$80 million in funding, which has bolstered production at Agrícola Famosa.
“What happened last week was an utterly atypical event due to the absence of ships at the Pecém Port.
“Even in the face of this adversity, CMA Terminals acted with utmost efficiency. If not for their efforts, the ships might not have been able to load the fruits, effectively saving the harvest.
“I also want to take this opportunity to highlight the growing fruit production and substantial traffic at the Port of Fortaleza, with an estimate for October exceeding 14,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).”
