State port authority Portos do Paraná announced a historic milestone on Tuesday (12): the state-owned company recorded a throughput of over 60 million tonnes in 2023, making it the first time it reached this level in cargo operations in a single year. Such achievement marks the second record set in seven days. The first occurred on November 27, with the movement of 58.4 million tonnes, surpassing the 58.3 million tonnes in 2022, which was the highest number until then.
Almost 61 million tonnes of cargo were handled at the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina, showing continuous growth throughout the year. There was a 17% increase in exports from January to November compared to 2022 (from 33.3 million tonnes to 38.8 million tonnes). Imports remained stable, from 20.2 million tonnes in 2023 to 20.7 million by November 2022.
Soybeans and bulk sugar occupied a special place in these past months, with soybeans experiencing a 43% increase, rising from 9.6 million tonnes to 13.7 million tonnes, and bulk sugar showing a growth of 26%, increasing from 3.8 million tonnes to 4.7 million tonnes.

Governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior celebrated the milestone with an event at the Iguaçu Palace alongside Vice-Governor Darci Piana, Infrastructure and Logistics Secretary Sandro Alex, and Portos do Paraná CEO Luiz Fernando Garcia.
“Many recall the queues at the Port of Paranaguá, once a source of embarrassment for the people of Paraná. However, today, it stands as a source of pride, having been elected as the best in the country for four consecutive times,” he noted. “The state’s commitment is to persist in investing in efficient logistics, as it benefits rural producers, industries, and exports not only from Paraná but also from other states utilizing the ports of Paraná,” emphasized the governor.
Luiz Fernando Garcia explained that the ports of Paraná have less than 5 kilometers of berthing space, making the achieved milestones even more significant. “It’s no wonder we are recognized as one of the most efficient ports in the world, handling a large volume of cargo in a small space,” he said.
“This was only possible thanks to a lot of logistical intelligence, operational adjustments, and adaptations in truck and train maneuver times, which led us to achieve 10 million tonnes more in loading and unloading compared to the level when we took over management in 2019,” Silva concluded.
FUTURE – For next year, Portos do Paraná’s administration expects to continue on this upward trend. In the coming months, the construction of the “Moegão” hopper system will begin, a project budgeted at R$ 592 million, involving implementing an exclusive design for unloading grains and meals by rail. The expectation is for a 63% increase in cargo unloading capacity with the completion of this innovation.
“Even in an extremely rainy year, Portos do Paraná beat its annual record almost a month ahead of time, and the outlook for the coming years is to improve these numbers even further,” evaluated Sandro Alex.
“The expansion of infrastructure for port access is essential for us to reach the new goal, which is to reach 90 million tons in throughput, and for that, we are preparing all modes of transport with the new Moegão, which is the largest port project in Brazil, in addition to the new road concessions,” added the secretary.
